Many people think pulmonary hypertension is the same as regular high blood pressure, but they are very different conditions that affect separate parts of the body.
Regular (systemic) hypertension is defined as elevated blood pressure in the arteries that transport blood from the heart to the rest of the body. It is monitored with an arm blood pressure cuff and, if not managed properly, can cause to heart attacks, strokes, and kidney damage. Stress, obesity, and eating a high-salt diet are all common factors.
In contrast, pulmonary hypertension (PH) is characterized by excessive blood pressure in the lungs’ arteries. It happens when these blood arteries narrow, stiffen, or block, making it difficult for the right side of the heart to pump blood into the lungs. Over time, this can lead to shortness of breath, exhaustion, chest pain, and limb edema.
A normal blood pressure check cannot reveal pulmonary hypertension, which frequently necessitates the use of specialized procedures such as echocardiography or right heart catheterization.
