What Is the Acapella Device?
The Acapella is a small breathing device that helps to clear mucus from your lungs. People with COPD, asthma, bronchiectasis, cystic fibrosis, or who have undergone surgery frequently use it to improve breathing and prevent chest infections.
How It Works
When blowing out via the acapella, it provides slight resistance, allowing you to breathe out against pressure.
Vibrating your airways helps loosen mucus.
This combination helps drive mucus up, allowing you to cough it out more readily.
How To Use It
Sit comfortably and keep your device clean and ready.
Take in a deep breath.
Blow out the air slowly and continuously through the device for around 3-4 seconds.
Repeat approximately 10-20 times.
Clear mucus with a “huff cough” or regular cough after taking a few breaths.
Clean and dry the equipment after use.
Your Respiratory therapist may alter the resistance (via a little dial) to match your breathing strength.
Benefits
- It improves breathing by clearing mucus.
- As it helps in removing secretions, this reduces chances of recurrent chest infections.
- It reduces coughing.
- It’s portable hand-held device hence can be uses at any place, including sitting, standing, and lying down.
- Requires only 10-20 minutes per session.
Do I need a Respiratory Therapist to use Acapella?
You do not necessarily require a therapist to utilize the Acapella device. Initial instruction with a respiratory therapist assures proper technique and safety. Once comfortable, patients can use it on their own at home, but they should undergo regular reviews. Stop and seek medical attention if your symptoms worsen or you experience unexpected discomfort.
